Kind of makes you think...

Sorry to everyone for being away for a while. A rather nasty bout of the 'flu (no...not the bird 'flu) has decided to visit the family and I have been otherwise occupied between work and taking care of those that were ill.

David at Waronguns posted some rather telling information that was posted to a prominent police officer magazine. I think that you will all enjoy it as it shows that most officers would rather not disarm the populace. Do officers really aim to protect the rights of ordinary Americans? Remember, it's easy to say: "Sure, I value the individual right to bear arms" when you are talking to a magazine, it's quite another to be under orders to confiscate firearms when your pension (retirement) is on the line. Makes you think...

Frankly, here's my question: if the bulk of officers really concern themselves about the rights of Americans, why don't they stand as one voice and say so? Sure, I know that politics exist in every aspect of every business and government body, but what is a city going to do? Fire all the officers? Don't even throw the New Orleans example at me - that was a different situation entirely.

See, I want to like and trust officers - but I have a very hard time doing so. Especially when they refuse to stand up and condemn the actions of those among them who seem to forget that this is supposed to be a America, not Mother Russia.

The police in our nation's capitol are unable to protect its citizenry hence even Marion Barry advocated the abolishment of the restrictive gun laws so the people could protect themselves. The police do the best they can even with all the silly rules of engagement they have to follow. Criminals don't care about rules, hence their advantage in a gunless mandated society.

I wonder about your spin. The article says that 2/3 of the police who responded thought that the people should have their right to own weapons regulated and presumably restricted. It also states that 1/3 of those responding admitted that they would confiscate weapons if asked.

That does not lead me to believe that the rank and file police officer is pro-2nd amendment.

I too would like to be able to trust and respect those who have chosen to wear a badge. However, they seem to be getting increasingly arrogant as the restrictions on firearms get tighter.

I think a lot of working police respect the second; it is the ones who have have spent most of their time in administration who are probably the ones who don't respect it. I know most of the sheriff's people I've met here in Utah are usually gun friendly; not so much the police in the major cities.

Gregg and Bob...there's no spin intended. I am referring to three distinct incidents I have experienced here in Utah over the last two years. One which was my fault (going 5 miles over the limit) and two that were not (I was driving near a nightclub and they were random DUI sweeps - No, I do not drink - never have).

In all three incidents (two in West Valley and one in American Fork) the officers asked "why I need a weapon" and one in West Valley asked "why not call 911? You're more likely to hurt a family member." (or something along those lines)

Granted, this only accounts for a small percentage of the police population. However, when you think about it - three stops - three anti-gun cops...what are the chances of that?

I moved to Utah from California (lived in Riverside and L.A.) and my experience growing up with officers was not a positive one. Even though I was never in trouble with the police department.

I saw officers do really, really bad things that a normal citizen would spend the rest of their natural life in prison. Granted, I'm referring to California, however, because of the actions of certain officers I have a hard time trusting other than a few officers that I do know (here in Utah) that are pro-gun. They have informed me that the newer incoming police force are largely "anti-gun" and are being taught to be such. This does not bode well, and does inspire any trust on my part.

I hope this clarifies my stance with the last posting.

Like I said, the most positive people I've met were the sheriffs; the city cops (especially SLC and West Valley City where I live) tend to be a little more uptight about guns; like you mentioned, they are being taught not to trust armed citizens.

Garrett,

You are right, most of the "new breed" of coppers are neutral or somewhat anti-. But, the majority of "older" coppers support the 2nd and think that more law-abiding citizens should have guns.

New Breeds, don't have much use for guns and some probably wouldn't even carry them if they didn't have to.

Cops are just a microcosm of society in general, don't forget.

BTW, "Police" magazine has taken a decidedly left-turn over the last few years, so I wouldn't be overly concerned about that 2/3 number.
